Beaded jewelry is an important part of the Samburu culture. In Samburu, beaded jewelry is worn mainly for its beauty, but it also can signify special relationships or special occasions. The colors of the jewelry reflect important concepts and elements in Samburu culture. Because the Samburu are traditionally a pastoral people, much of the color symbolism relates to cattle. Below are some typical colors of beads along with some common symbolism:
Red – signifies danger, ferocity, bravery, strength, and unity
Blue – important because it represents the sky which represents water for the cows
Green – important because it represents the land which grows food for the cattle to eat. Green also represents the health of the Samburu people.
Yellow – Suggests hospitality because it is the color of the animal skins on guest beds
White – represents purity because it represents milk which comes from a cow. Cows are considered a pure and holy animal.
Black – represents the color of the people, but more im- portantly the hardships we all go through in life.
