I'm excited to start a new year together exploring the elements and principles of art. This year we will be traveling through time learning about different mediums of art. During the first two week of school we will be unpacking the question "what is art". Students will be challenged to identify it, describe in, and create it. Together we will create a mural that encompasses the many meanings of the word art.
Our mural is based on the life and work of Tyree Guyton.
Detroit, MI
Primarily a painter and sculptor, Tyree Guyton has also been described as an urban environmental artist. Tyree Guyton's work has been installed and displayed across the world, including a feature in 1999 by the United States Department of State in the Art in Embassies Program with an exhibition in the American Embassy in Quito, Ecuador.[3] Permanent installations of his work have been established in Sydney, Australia,[4] at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and in Mount Vernon, New York.
Tyree’s Heidelberg Project
Since creating the Heidelberg Project with his grandfather in 1986, Guyton has received international recognition as an artist, educator, and community leader. Guyton’s vision for Heidelberg is to transform the two block area into a state- of – the-art cultural village. This Iconic colorfully painted polka dotted neighborhood, which symbolizes our society’s diversity, has played a vital role in transforming the visual indignities of poverty and have placed an international spotlight on the area.
