Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain. He was the first child of Don Jose Ruiz y Blasco, an art teacher, and Maria Picasso y Lopez. At an early age Pablo showed an interest in drawing. His first words were "piz, piz", which is short for "lapiz", the Spanish word for pencil. When he was nine, Picasso finished his first painting, Le picador. It shows a man on a horse at a bullfight. When he started painting, he used a realistic style. He began to experiment with different techniques and styles. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque invented Cubism, a form of painting that featured simple geometric shapes. He is also known for making collages – gluing previously unrelated things together with images. He created oil paintings, sculpture, drawings, stage designs, tapestries, rugs, etchings, collage, and architecture. No other painter or sculptor was as famous while he was still alive. It is estimated that Picasso produced at least 50,000 works of art: 1,885 paintings; 1,228 sculptures; 2,880 ceramics, roughly 12,000 drawings, many thousands of prints, and numerous tapestries and rugs. He also wrote plays and poetry. Students Grade K-5 will be working on different variations of shattered hearts inspired by Pablo Picasso's Cubism paintings. Students will be using rulers, oil pastels, crayons, pencils, and watercolors to create the effects depicted above.

Artist Bio: Jackson Pollock Born in Cody, Wyoming, Jackson Pollock (1912 – 1956) became one of the most original American artists of the twentieth century. He was the youngest of five brothers, and his mother encouraged her sons to become artists; three of them did. While he was growing up, Pollock’s family moved all over the American West. But when he was eighteen, Pollock moved to New York City to become an artist. Jackson Pollock is considered an Abstract Expressionist painter. He was the first "action painter", meaning that he would drip, pour, throw and splash his paint onto very large canvases which were often laid flat on the floor of his New York studio. Many say he would literally dance, as though in a trance, as he created his masterpieces. Pollock is widely considered the most challenging and influential American artist of the 20th century. “My painting does not come from Featured Student ArtworkFeatured Stories & ResourcesSpecial Shout out to Ms. Sipress' class for working together to create our art history time machine!
