The traditional style of art in El Salvador comes from the northern town of La Palma, and that is where artists are trained and live today.
Originating from an artist named Fernando Llort, the art is simple and colorful, typically making use of animals such as birds, rabbits, and turtles, as well as common objects such as flowers, trees, and houses.

After traveling and studying in Europe in the United States, Llort returned to El Salvador amidst war. Leaving San Salvador for La Palma, he started an artist workshop called, “La Semilla de Dios.”.
Teaching the people of La Palma to make art has given them an alternative way to make a living. Today, if you buy a souvenir in El Salvador, chances are it will feature folk art in this traditional style.

People often ask us about the symbolism behind the naive style of folk art, hand painted on our El Salvadorian products. Each piece reflects the images of the every-day life of the region: birds, flowers, animals, villagers and adobe houses. The artists put their creativity and personality into each item so that the colors and designs are 100% unique.

Story Telling Through Symbols

According to Aboriginal belief, all life as it is today - human, animal, bird and fish is part of one vast unchanging network of relationships which can be traced to the great spirit ancestors of the Dreamtime. Many paintings by Aboriginal artists create a "Dreamtime Story" using symbols within their work of art. The narrative follows the legend of the land, as created by ancestral beings in their journey. The modern day rendition is a reinterpretation of songs, ceremonies, rock art, and body art that was the norm for many thousands of years. Certain symbols depending on the Aboriginal tribe you belong to, can vary in meaning from campfire, tree, hill, digging hole, waterhole, or spring. Use of the symbol can be clarified further by use of color, such as water being depicted in blue or black.

What does Aboriginal mean?
Aboriginal Art is art made by the indigenous people of Australia. It includes works in a wide range of media including painting on leaves, wood carving, rock carving, sculpture, and sand painting.

Dot painting consists of various paint colours like yellow (the sun), brown (the soil), red (desert sand) and white (the clouds and the sky). These are traditional Aboriginal colours. Dot paintings can be painted on anything though in aboriginal times they used to paint dot pictures on rocks, caves etc. Mostly Indigenous nature like animals or lakes and of course, the dreamtime. They used to paint stories and legends on caves and rocks to represent their religion.

CREATIVE PROCESS
Lancashire artists grade K-5 embarked on a three week creative process that started with tracing their hand or creating an Australian animal on construction paper. Using oil pastels, scissors, pencil, and crayon each student added unique and intricate dot designs inside their work of art. During the second session each student designed a background for their hand or animal using Australian dream time symbols. Each work of art tells a story about the person or animal using these special symbols. Finally, we experimented with dot painting on top of our background using tempera paint, sticks, straws, and Q-tips. After completing our Australian masterpieces each student wrote a detailed dream time story about their project
