Essential Question: How do artists care for and maintain materials? I Can Statements: (K-1) I can care for my work space (2-3) I can safely use my materials and tools (4-5) I can keep my tools and materials clean and organized This was our first painting project of the school year. Students first started their design dot design using markers and crayons. Each class worked up to using paint to enhance their dot. We focused to painting techniques and clean up procedures. This is a slideshow includes images of Mr. Smith's class and Mrs. Callahan's class following classroom painting procedures! Dot Photo Gallery

A special thank you to Penny Hill Lawn & Landscaping and Martin's Landscaping for generously donating rocks for this project. We could not have done this without their support! Phase One: Paper "Hand" Fish During the first week of school students listed to the story "You be You" by Linda Kranz. Then each student selected their own color of paper and traced their very own hand. We used out imagination to turn our hand into a colorful fish! I got this idea from a fellow art teacher. Our plan is to save our fish for the entire school year and measure our hands at the end to see how much we have grown. Currently, our school of fish is on display in the main lobby and swimming down the stairwell to art. Phase Two: Rock Fish After completing our paper fish we read the story "Only One You" by Linda Kranz and got a bunch of great ideas for painting fish on rocks. Each image in the book features real painted rocks. Each student selected their own rock and used a mixture of tempera cakes and acrylic paint to decorate their rock. Phase Three: Collaborative Land Art School of Fish Students will help design and create a school of rock fish on our mindfulness trail behind Carrcroft Elementary School. We will learn about the famous land artist Andy Goldsworthy and use his work for inspiration.
