During the first week of school students listed to the story "You be You" by Linda Kranz. Then each student selected their own color of paper and traced their very own hand. We used out imagination to turn our hand into a colorful fish! I got this idea from a fellow art teacher. Our plan is to save our fish for the entire school year and measure our hands at the end to see how much we have grown. Currently, our school of fish is on display in the main lobby and swimming down the stairwell to art.
After completing our paper fish we read the story "Only One You" by Linda Kranz and got a bunch of great ideas for painting fish on rocks. Each image in the book features real painted rocks. Each student selected their own rock and used a mixture of tempera cakes and acrylic paint to decorate their rock.
Students will help design and create a school of rock fish on our mindfulness trail behind Carrcroft Elementary School. We will learn about the famous land artist Andy Goldsworthy and use his work for inspiration.
