5th grade students went on a trip to the Brandywine River Art Museum in Chadds  Ford, Pennseylvania this week. This field trip was a golden broom reward for earning the most golden brooms in art from September to November. The 5th grade earned a total of 20 golden brooms.

On our trip to the museum we visited the Rural Modern: American Art Beyond the City exhibit, the Brandywine Christmas train exhibit, as well as Jamie and Andrew Wyeth's collections.

Below are a few examples of works viewed at the museum.

After our visit to the Brandywine River art museum, we began creating our own works of art inspired by our trip.
Carrcroft's 5th grade students will have their own student art exhibit
in the Imagine Brandywine Annex at the museum.

The Imagine Brandywine Exhibit will be on display
March 5, 2017 - May 21st, 2017

Kente cloth is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips and is native to the Ashanti tribe of South Ghana. The icon of African cultural heritage around the world, Kente cloth is identified by its dazzling, multicolored patterns of bright colors, geometric shapes, and bold designs.  Kente characterized by weft designs woven into every available block of plain weave is called adweneasa. The Akan/ Ashanti people choose Kente cloths as much for their names as their colors and patterns.

Kente Colors

"A joyful ode to kente celebrates the beauty and tradition of this West African fabric that is now so popular in America. Rhythmic verse shows the special meaning of colors and patterns while glorious paintings show kente as it is used and worn in Ghana, from babies' blankets to dancers' capes. An author's note further explains kente's rich symbolism."
